Evaluating the Electronic PortfolioIn reviewing the electronic portfolios that are produced, it is important to establish different expectation levels for development. Below are a set of rubrics that address different criteria for effective electronic portfolio development, which are closely aligned with the technology skills of the student or teacher portfolio developer.

Three Ring is a new free service offering free Android and iPhone apps for digitizing and organizing student work. Using the app teachers can take a picture of a student's work and upload it to a free Three Ring account. Three Ring offers teachers a lot of organizational flexibility. You could organize artifacts by student name, class, date, or just about any other tagging system that works for you.

"I started teaching 15 years ago and that is when I first came across this concept of a 'portfolio.' A portfolio is a storehouse for projects, writing pieces, art, and performances. It can be used by students, teachers, and parents to document what they're doing (either day-to-day things or through their best work or improvements they've made). I see portfolios as a way to hold onto and think about what you're doing."

Personalized learning plans and electronic portfolios are being implemented to help students take ownership of their own education. Could this student "self-advocacy" be an essential component of teachers' attempts to differentiate instruction? Absolutely! Consistently applied, personalized learning plans would seem to be a natural means of maintaining student engagement and motivation. Opportunity and choice seem to be keywords here - as one student said, "it just shows you the opportunities you can have if one doesn't work out."
